An expert panel and an international design contest put responsible fashion on the agenda for September 13, 2026.
Fashion’s sustainability conversation becomes more useful when it gets specific: the materials inside a garment, the decisions behind its production and the support designers need to work differently. These questions will inform Unique Fashion Show New York 2026, returning to Manhattan on September 13 during New York Fashion Week.
Presented by the France-based Unique Fashion Foundation Association (UFFA), the independently produced event will take place at Park Avenue Christian Church, 1010 Park Avenue. Its sustainability programme pairs an expert panel with the second edition of the international Sustainable Fashion Contest, bringing education and emerging talent into the same room.
For UFS, the New York return follows a Paris 2026 edition that recognised Italian label CIRIANA for its approach to materials and artistic expression. Together, the two events trace a continuing interest in how responsible design can develop through discussion, recognition and professional opportunity.
Sustainable Fashion at New York Fashion Week 2026
The announced sustainability panel brings together three perspectives that are essential to the conversation: material science, design practice and circular fashion.
Dr. Karen R. Pearson, professor of Chemistry and chair of the Sustainability Council at the Fashion Institute of Technology, will contribute a scientific and educational perspective. Britta Cabanos, founder of Inside Fashion Design, brings 30 years of professional experience, including work with Nike, Oakley, Tommy Hilfiger and DKNY. Bridgett Artise, founder of Sustainable Fashion Week US and Born Again Vintage, adds expertise rooted in upcycling and extending the creative life of existing clothing.
The programme will address material innovation, responsible production, circular fashion, professional education and digital transformation, with practical solutions for independent brands among the announced priorities.
The combination is relevant to designers navigating the distance between an idea and a finished collection. A fabric must meet aesthetic and functional expectations, but its sourcing and production also deserve scrutiny. An upcycled garment needs a compelling design, alongside a workable process for making it. Education helps connect these decisions to everyday practice.
From CIRIANA’s Paris’ 26 Win to the New York Contest
At Unique Fashion Show Paris on May 30, 2026, Italian label CIRIANA received first prize in the Circle X Sustainability Contest for its collection A Botanical Reverie / Morphira. The international jury recognised its artistic achievement, innovative approach and considered use of materials.
With an emphasis on organic textiles, Italian craftsmanship and garment longevity, CIRIANA offers a recent example of the work recognised through the platform’s sustainability initiatives. Its Paris award provides context for the next chapter in New York, where emerging talent will again have an opportunity to present responsible approaches to fashion.
The International Sustainable Fashion Contest Returns
UFFA will present the second edition of its international Sustainable Fashion Contest in collaboration with Sustainable Fashion Week US and Inside Fashion Design.
Dedicated to discovering and promoting designers contributing to responsible fashion, the competition will give selected finalists international exposure through the UFS platform. Organisers also outline opportunities to connect with buyers, media, educators and industry professionals. For emerging talent, these relationships can be consequential. Presenting a collection creates visibility; speaking with educators, buyers and experienced practitioners can help a designer understand how to develop it further.
Placed alongside the sustainability panel, the contest brings the discussion into practice. It creates space for designers to explain their ideas, demonstrate their approach and engage with people who can support the next stage of their work.

A Conversation Developing Across Editions
The September programme continues a dialogue established at earlier UFS events. In Paris in May 2025, an Istituto Marangoni discussion examined the rise of AI and digital design, with the event recap linking the session to ethical fashion, education and international market access.
At the January 2026 New York edition, Britta Cabanos moderated a conversation around fashion’s cultural influence, regeneration and community. Her subsequent account explored the role of storytelling, digital innovation and international exposure in creating opportunities for designers. The forthcoming sustainability panel develops that conversation through a closer examination of materials, production and circularity.
The wider UFS New York Fashion Week’26 event will include a designer showroom, professional networking, art exhibitions and digital experiences. A special performance presented by New York City Opera and a live art performance by Robert Vargas will accompany the programme.
“Unique Fashion Show was created to give designers and creative professionals more than a moment on the runway. Our goal is to build long-term connections among fashion, education, technology, culture, media and international business.”
For the sustainability programme, that ambition has a practical test: whether the conversations and introductions made in New York help participants develop more informed design and production decisions. The panel and contest give those exchanges a dedicated place within a busy Fashion Week calendar.
