The German fragrance and ingredients group is investing in additional manufacturing capacity for Globalide, strengthening its Asian supply network as demand grows for high-performance ingredients with improved environmental characteristics.
German fragrance and ingredients manufacturer Symrise is expanding production capacity for its biodegradable musk ingredient Globalide in India, strengthening its international manufacturing network as fragrance companies place greater emphasis on ingredient performance, supply-chain resilience and environmental considerations.
Announced on October 15, the investment will increase production capacity for Globalide, a macrocyclic musk used in fragrance formulations. The expansion forms part of Symrise’s broader strategy to develop its portfolio of speciality aroma molecules while improving access to high-growth markets in Asia.
The move highlights the increasing importance of ingredient innovation within the global fragrance industry, where manufacturers are seeking materials that combine olfactory performance with characteristics relevant to environmental assessments. For suppliers, investment in specialised ingredients also presents an opportunity to strengthen their position in a competitive market shaped by changing formulation requirements and demand for reliable international supply.
Expanding Fragrance Manufacturing in Asia
The additional manufacturing capacity in India will become part of Symrise’s global production network, providing another source of supply for an ingredient the company considers strategically important to its Scent & Care business.
The investment supports the group’s ONE Symrise strategy, which prioritises growth through differentiated products, targeted capital allocation and greater operational resilience. Establishing additional capacity closer to Asian customers is intended to improve supply flexibility while supporting demand from fragrance, cosmetics and personal-care manufacturers across the region.
The investment in our Globalide production footprint underlines our ambition to strengthen strategic product areas that create tangible value for our customers. With this step we are advancing our Scent & Care portfolio.
Symrise describes the project as an investment in world-scale production capacity but has not disclosed its financial value, the volume of additional output or an expected completion date. The scale of its commercial impact will therefore depend on the eventual production capacity and the pace of demand for the ingredient.
Biodegradable Musk and the Evolution of Fragrance Formulation
Globalide belongs to the macrocyclic musk category, a group of fragrance ingredients valued for their long-lasting scent characteristics and ability to add depth and softness to perfume compositions. Musk materials are widely used in fine fragrance, cosmetics and personal-care products, contributing to both fragrance performance and the overall sensory experience.
According to Symrise, Globalide is biodegradable and offers versatility across different fragrance applications. The company positions the ingredient as an option for manufacturers seeking to incorporate environmental considerations into formulation development while maintaining the performance expected of contemporary fragrance products.
Biodegradability is an important factor in assessing the environmental characteristics of fragrance ingredients, particularly because substances used in personal-care products can enter wastewater systems during use and disposal. Their persistence and potential effects on aquatic environments are therefore relevant considerations in ingredient selection.
However, the biodegradability of an individual fragrance molecule does not establish the overall sustainability of a finished product. Environmental performance also depends on the sourcing and manufacture of ingredients, energy consumption, formulation composition and other stages of the product lifecycle.
Symrise has not disclosed specific biodegradation test results or comparative lifecycle assessment data for Globalide in its announcement. The ingredient’s environmental positioning should therefore be distinguished from independently demonstrated reductions in the environmental impact of finished fragrance formulations.
Ingredient Innovation and Global Supply-Chain Strategy
The expansion reflects the strategic importance of specialised fragrance ingredients, as suppliers increasingly compete through proprietary technologies, formulation expertise and manufacturing capabilities. For fragrance houses and beauty brands, consistent access to differentiated materials can influence product development, particularly when formulations must meet technical specifications alongside evolving environmental expectations.
With the additional production capacity in India, we are moving closer to the fast-growing markets in Asia while adding another pillar to our long-term global manufacturing footprint.
The investment also illustrates how ingredient manufacturers are adapting their production networks to support international growth. Expanding manufacturing across multiple locations can provide greater operational flexibility and reduce dependence on individual facilities, although the environmental implications of such investments depend on production processes, energy sources and distribution requirements.
Headquartered in Holzminden, Germany, Symrise supplies fragrance, flavour and cosmetic ingredients to manufacturers worldwide. The company reported sales of approximately €4.9 billion in 2025 and operates more than 100 sites across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.
For Symrise, the Globalide expansion combines a commercial objective with the development of an ingredient positioned for fragrance formulations that take environmental characteristics into account. Its longer-term significance will depend on market adoption, the performance of the additional manufacturing capacity and the extent to which the material contributes to measurable improvements in finished products.
As the fragrance industry reassesses the ingredients and industrial processes behind its products, investment in specialised materials and manufacturing infrastructure is becoming an increasingly important part of how suppliers respond to changing market requirements.
