The L’Occitane Group-owned beauty brand has secured its first B Corp certification, marking a new stage in its efforts to formalise social and environmental accountability amid continued global expansion.

Sol de Janeiro, the Brazilian-inspired beauty brand known for its fragrance mists and body care products, has achieved B Corp certification, joining a global network of businesses assessed against standards for social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

Announced on September 22 during Climate Week NYC, the certification comes as the company continues its international expansion and as environmental and social responsibility become increasingly important considerations for beauty businesses. The milestone also strengthens the sustainability credentials of parent company L’Occitane Group, which recently secured recertification under B Lab’s updated standards.

Sol de Janeiro was certified under Version 1.6 of the B Impact Assessment, an earlier framework that evaluates companies across five areas: governance, workers, community, environment and customers. The distinction is significant because L’Occitane Group’s more recent recertification was conducted under B Lab’s new standards, which introduce a different approach to assessing corporate impact.

From Brand Growth to Corporate Accountability

Founded in 2015, Sol de Janeiro has developed into an internationally recognised beauty business, building its identity around Brazilian-inspired body care, fragrance and a marketing approach centred on inclusivity and self-expression. Its growth has positioned the brand among the prominent names in prestige beauty, where commercial success is increasingly accompanied by expectations of greater transparency across business operations and supply chains.

B Corp certification provides an external assessment framework through which companies can demonstrate performance beyond conventional financial measures. Administered by nonprofit organisation B Lab, the certification examines business practices across employee welfare, community engagement, environmental management, customer responsibility and corporate governance.

According to Sol de Janeiro, its assessment identified particular strengths in people-focused practices, including employee engagement, diversity and inclusion. The company describes these areas as longstanding elements of its organisational culture, although its announcement did not provide a detailed breakdown of individual assessment scores or environmental performance indicators.

Achieving B Corp Certification is a meaningful milestone for Sol de Janeiro and a testament to the work happening across our entire organization.

The certification, he added, provides a framework for measuring progress and identifying opportunities to improve the company’s social and environmental performance as it grows.

Biodiversity Conservation and Women’s Empowerment

Beyond its internal operations, Sol de Janeiro has expanded its social and environmental initiatives through the Sol de Janeiro Foundation, established in 2024 to support biodiversity conservation and the empowerment of young women.

The foundation works with 13 partner organisations on initiatives ranging from the protection and restoration of Brazil’s Atlantic and Amazon rainforests to programmes supporting access to clean water, education and economic opportunity for young women internationally.

According to the company, several million dollars have been committed to these initiatives since the foundation’s establishment, although the announcement does not specify the precise amount allocated or provide independently measured outcomes for individual programmes.

The focus on biodiversity is particularly relevant to the wider beauty industry, which relies on agricultural commodities, botanical ingredients and natural resources whose production and sourcing can affect ecosystems and local communities. Conservation programmes can contribute to broader environmental objectives, but their effectiveness depends on long-term implementation, measurable outcomes and sustained financial support.

What B Corp Certification Means for the Beauty Industry

Sol de Janeiro’s certification comes amid a wider reassessment of how beauty companies demonstrate corporate responsibility. As sustainability claims become more prevalent, external verification has gained importance for businesses seeking to establish credibility with consumers, commercial partners and investors.

B Corp certification assesses a company’s broader business practices rather than certifying individual products as sustainable. It should therefore not be interpreted as confirmation that every Sol de Janeiro formulation, ingredient or packaging component meets a particular environmental standard.

The distinction is increasingly important as brands communicate environmental commitments across product development, sourcing, manufacturing and marketing. Certification can provide a structured basis for accountability, but its credibility also depends on continued disclosure, reassessment and measurable improvements.

Sol de Janeiro’s certification under Version 1.6 also places it within a period of transition for B Lab, as the organisation introduces updated standards intended to strengthen requirements across key areas of corporate impact.

For L’Occitane Group, the milestone adds another certified business to its portfolio and reflects a broader effort to integrate social and environmental performance into corporate operations. For Sol de Janeiro, the challenge will be to translate the recognition into sustained progress as its international business expands.

The certification marks a significant development in the brand’s corporate responsibility strategy, but its longer-term value will be determined by the improvements that follow. As expectations around responsible business continue to evolve, independent assessment is becoming less a final achievement than a framework through which companies are expected to demonstrate continuing accountability.
